The National Labor Congress and the Trades Union Congress have embarked on an indefinite strike as a result of the Federal Government to conclude negotiations of the minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal in the increase of electricity tariff.
The joint strike action was declared by NLC and TUC on the 31st May, to take effect on Monday the 3rd of June.
Owing to this, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has joined the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress. The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Emmanuel Osodeke, enjoined federal universities across the country to join in the strike as they are an affiliate of the Congress. He also asked branch chairpersons to mobilize their members to join in the strike action.
The Senior Staff Association of Universities, SSANU, also joined the nationwide indefinite strike proposed by NLC as they also claim to be affiliate members. Members of SSANU were directed to liaise with their NLC state chapter to ensure a comprehensive closure of the workplace and also to give progress reports of the industrial action to the national Secretariat regularly.
