NLC, TUC, SUSPENDS NATIONWIDE INDEFINITE STRIKE FOR FIVE DAYS.
The members of the Nigerian Labour Congress have called off the nationwide indefinite strike that began yesterday for five days pending their meeting on Tuesday.
The strike which started as a result of the refusal of the government to meet the demand for a new minimum wage and also reduction in the increase in electricity tariff has come to a few resolutions and have been suspended.
A meeting was done in Abuja by the Labour Congress Chairman and Trade Union Congress Chairman, Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo respectively. During the cause of the meeting, a few resolutions were made and signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria in a meeting held on Monday night.
The resolution stated: “The President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000;””Arising from the above, the Tripartite Committee is to meet everyday for the next one week with a view to arriving at an agreeable National Minimum Wage.”
They also agreed to “convene meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment and no worker is to be victimized as a result of the industrial action.”
Having settled with these resolutions and the suspension of the strike for five days, it is expected that members of the Labour Congress resumes duties and offices reopen.
